Les Comores, un archipel d’îles de l’océan Indien, au large de la côte sud-est de l’Afrique, se sont vu attribuer une enveloppe de 135 millions de dollars par la Banque africaine de développement (BAD) pour moderniser ses ports.
Le soutien de la BAD au Projet de corridor maritime et de facilitation du commerce régional (PACMFCR) porte sur l’extension et la modernisation de deux ports.
L’Union des Comores compte trois ports situés à Moroni (Grande Comores), Mutsamudu (Anjouan) et Boingoma (Mohéli). Environ 90 % du fret à destination et entre les trois îles de l’archipel des Comores est transporté par voie maritime.
La BAD a déclaré que le potentiel des Comores à développer les secteurs de la pêche, de l’agriculture et du tourisme est entravé par des « défis structurels majeurs », notamment en ce qui concerne la mauvaise qualité des infrastructures portuaires.
Pour accueillir les ferries et les bateaux de pêche, le port de Moroni sera agrandi d’un nouveau quai de 240 mètres et le port de Boingoma d’un quai de 136 mètres.
Le projet comprendra également la construction de 10 magasins de produits de la pêche, équipés de chambres froides alimentées par l’énergie solaire et de solutions de transport insulaires réfrigérées adaptées aux besoins des femmes, à proximité de chacun des ports.
Il appuiera les coopératives de femmes en leur fournissant des équipements de surgélation pour la production et la transformation des produits de la pêche et de l’agriculture.
La directrice générale de la BAD pour l’Afrique de l’Est, Nnenna Nwabufo, a déclaré : « Le projet, qui vient d’être approuvé par les conseils d’administration du Groupe de la Banque, vise à accroître la capacité et l’efficacité des ports de Moroni et de Boingoma pour répondre aux besoins actuels et futurs. Il contribuera à développer les chaînes de valeur locales dans les secteurs de la pêche et de l’agriculture, et facilitera le commerce interinsulaire et régional. »
Le projet sera cofinancé par plusieurs institutions dont la Banque européenne d'investissement, la Banque mondiale, la Banque islamique de développement et l'Agence française de développement.

Comoros, an archipelago of islands in the Indian Ocean, off the southeastern coast of Africa, has been awarded a $135 million package from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to upgrade its ports.
The AfDB’s support for the Maritime Corridor and Regional Trade Facilitation Project (PACMFCR) involves the extension and modernisation of two ports.
The Union of the Comoros has three ports located in Moroni (Grande Comores), Mutsamudu (Anjouan) and Boingoma (Mohéli). Around 90% of freight to and between the three islands of the Comoros archipelago is transported by sea.
The AfDB said that the potential for the Comoros to develop the fisheries, agriculture and tourism sectors is hampered by “major structural challenges”, particularly when it comes to the poor quality of port infrastructure.
To accommodate ferries and fishing boats, the port of Moroni will be expanded by a new 240-metre quay and the port of Boingoma by a 136-metre quay.
The project will also involve the construction of 10 fisheries products stores, equipped with solar-powered cold rooms and refrigerated island transport solutions adapted to women’s needs, close to each of the ports.
It will support women’s cooperatives by providing them with deep-freezing equipment for the production and processing of fisheries and agricultural products.
The AfDB’s director general for Eastern Africa, Nnenna Nwabufo, said, “The project, which has just been approved by the Boards of Directors of the Bank Group, aims to increase the capacity and efficiency of the ports of Moroni and Boingoma to meet current and future needs. It will help develop local value chains in fisheries and agriculture sectors, and facilitate inter-island and regional trade.”
The project will be co-financed by several institutions including the European Investment Bank, the World Bank, the Islamic Development Bank and the Agence Française de Développement.
