La société énergétique TerraPower de Bill Gates a inauguré la construction de sa centrale nucléaire de nouvelle génération dans le Wyoming, aux États-Unis.
Le fondateur de Microsoft était présent cette semaine à une petite cérémonie pour célébrer le début officiel de la construction du projet de démonstration Natrium, à Kemmerer, qui vise à révolutionner la façon dont l'énergie nucléaire est produite en utilisant du sodium – et non de l'eau – pour le refroidissement.
La multinationale d'ingénierie basée aux États-Unis Bechtel est le partenaire de TerraPower en matière d'ingénierie, d'approvisionnement et de construction sur le projet, qui est situé à côté de la centrale électrique de Naughton de la compagnie électrique américaine PacifiCorp.
TerraPower fait partie des dizaines d'entreprises en lice pour développer et exporter une nouvelle génération de petits réacteurs modulaires (SMR), qui, selon les experts, peuvent être construits pour la moitié du coût des réacteurs standards refroidis à l'eau.
La Chine a déjà construit un prototype de SMR à lit de galets refroidi au gaz à haute température sur le site de Shindaowan, dans la province du Shandong, et la construction du premier SMR terrestre au monde, Linglong 1, a commencé sur l'île de Hainan en 2021.
En février, les travaux de construction du SMR de Yakoutie ont débuté près d'UstKuyga, en Yakoutie, dans le nord de l'Arctique russe, dans le but de le mettre en service en 2028.
Le réacteur Natrium est construit à titre de projet de démonstration, mais on espère qu'il deviendra une centrale commerciale à grande échelle une fois terminé.
PacifiCorp dit qu'elle espère arrêter de brûler du charbon à la centrale de Naughton en 2026 et du gaz naturel en 2036 et plutôt passer à l'utilisation du réacteur Natrium pour au moins une partie de ses besoins.
Craig Albert, président et directeur de l'exploitation de Bechtel, a déclaré que Natrium serait le premier projet nucléaire à bénéficier de la suite d'outils et de systèmes numériques de Bechtel, dont il a été prouvé qu'ils donnaient des résultats exceptionnels sur d'autres grandes installations énergétiques.
« La conception innovante du réacteur Natrium lancera une nouvelle approche de la construction de centrales nucléaires, conçue pour être plus sûre, plus propre, plus rapide et plus efficace que de nombreuses sources d'énergie alternatives », a-t-il déclaré.
« L'implication de Bechtel par TerraPower dès le début signifie que l'ensemble du cycle de vie du projet, y compris la construction, a été optimisé à chaque étape, rendant l'ensemble du processus rentable, rapide et reproductible », a-t-il ajouté.

Bill Gates’ energy company TerraPower has broken ground at the company’s next generation nuclear power plant in Wyoming, USA.
The Microsoft founder was present at a small ceremony this week to celebrate the official construction start to the Natrium Demonstration Project, in Kemmerer, which aims to revolutionise how nuclear power is generated by using sodium – not water – for cooling.
US-based engineering multinational Bechtel is TerraPower’s engineering, procurement, and construction partner on the project, which is situated next to US power company PacifiCorp’s Naughton Power Plant.
TerraPower is one of dozens of companies vying to develop and export a new generation of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), which experts say can be built for half the cost of standard water-cooled reactors.
China has already constructed a prototype high temperature gas cooled pebble-bed SMR at the Shindaowan site in Shandong province and construction of the world’s first land-based SMR Linglong 1, started on the island of Hainan in 2021.
In February, construction work started on the Yakutia SMR near UstKuyga in Yakutia in Russia’s Arctic north with the aim of commissioning it in 2028.
The Natrium Reactor is being built as a demonstration project but it is hoped that it will become a full-scale commercial plant upon completion.
PacifiCorp says it hopes to stop burning coal at the Naughton plant in 2026 and natural gas in 2036 and instead switch to using the Natrium Reactor for at least some of its requirement.
Craig Albert, Bechtel President and COO said that Natrium would be the first nuclear project to benefit from Bechtel’s suite of digital tools and systems, which have been proven to deliver exceptional results on other large energy facilities.
“The Natrium reactor’s innovative design will launch a new approach to nuclear plant construction that is designed to be safer, cleaner, faster, and more efficient than many energy source alternatives,” he said.
“TerraPower’s involvement of Bechtel from the very beginning means the entire project lifecycle, including construction, has been optimized at every stage, making the entire process cost-effective, fast, and repeatable,” he added

Het energiebedrijf TerraPower van Bill Gates heeft baanbrekend werk verricht bij de volgende generatie kerncentrale van het bedrijf in Wyoming, VS.
